What will our visit include?
Sign up to attend! This event is limited to 25 participants. Meet promptly in the hotel lobby at 7PM Tuesday night, and travel by arranged transportation to Open Signal, a legendary community media center in Portland. Once there, we'll have time to look at the exhibit in the lobby, a selection of "best of" Video exhibits from the past 30 years of Open Signal/Portland Community Media. Community Engagement Director Lindsay Kaplan will guide a tour of the facility, showing us the various classes, studios and video rooms and talk about the work they do, from community access origins to community oriented video projects and artists in residence. We will take time to check out the portable "podcast" airstream–the rotating mural out front that changes monthly, and hear about OS's work in the community. We'll then have 20-30 minutes to watch a selection of videos/reels that show some of the great recent work and hear how OS works with all types of demographics, embracing locality, including music video projects where they partnered with local school classrooms, and a neighborhood video project where they worked with the immediate surrounding neighborhood near OS in a collaborative process. We'll have time for Q&A and then there will be two open activities people can participate in if they choose. (Grateful thanks to Jon Betz of Collective Eye Films for making this opportunity possible.)
