Market Mania Instructions
Large Group Presentations can be done either using a Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow or a stand-alone player such as QuickTime. Those intending to speak during the presentation, interspersing talking points with the video clips, must use the PowerPoint option. Those who do not intend to speak during the presentation, letting the video speak for itself, may use the QuickTime option.
Using PowerPoint
- Exhibiting Partners (EPs) showing clips and using the PowerPoint option will need to embed their clips in the slideshow. (Instructions on how to do this can be found here.)
- EPs with no media to show can present with Microsoft PowerPoint as they wish.
-
If an EP is showing clips and using the PowerPoint option, but cannot create
a PowerPoint presentation, they can send their clips, in avi, wmv, or mpg
format, to the National Media Market Director. The clips will be embedded in
a no-frills, NMM-templated PowerPoint slideshow.
- If the clip is over 7 minutes long, please indicate the exact in and out points of the portion of the clip to be embedded. Clip in and out points must be defined using the Windows Media Player time code.
- If video is to be inserted into an existing PowerPoint presentation, clear instructions must be included as to where the clips should be placed.
- Include any other information such as language track to use or any other important details that are to be included.
- Use only avi, wmv, or mpg formats, please.
- Use only fonts that are included in the base installation of Windows.
- If using graphics, use common image formats that are cross platform such as jpg, png, gif, and bmp.
- The National Media Market uses PowerPoint 2003. If you use PowerPoint 2007 or greater, please save your PowerPoint presentation as a .ppt file, rather than the default .pptx format.
Using QuickTime (or other media player)
- EPs showing clips only, without needing to stop and start the player, can use other media file types beyond what is acceptable for Microsoft PowerPoint. A commonly requested media format is QuickTime using H.264 compression. This is now available.
- If you have another format that you would like to use, please contact the National Media Market Director. Other media formats are negotiable.
- EPs opting for QuickTime must provide only one file. Do not send a separate file for each clip; combine all your clips into one file.
All Presentations
- All presentations will be limited to seven (7) minutes in time, and 2 GB in hard drive space. The seven minutes includes the clips and any speaking the presenter is to do.
- Presentations should be burned to a CD- or DVD-ROM, and sent to the National Media Market no later than September 4, 2009 so the presentations can be tested, and any issues resolved in advance of the Market. Additional fees will apply if deadlines are missed.
- If any of these instructions pose a problem for you, please contact the National Media Market Director so a solution can be reached.
-
Please include your contact information and a brief description of the
clip’s content. Mail presentation to:

PowerPoint Guidelines
Video
When using Microsoft PowerPoint, we can only accept movies that have been created with standard compression CODECs that are in use by Windows. Save your files in avi, wmv, or mpg only. We cannot use QuickTime (.mov) or H.264 (.mp4) files in PowerPoint. Please use one of the following CODECs:
- Cinepak
- Intel Indeo Video R3.2
- Indeo 5.10
- Intel RAW
We recommend a small test you can do to check whether your movie file will work in PowerPoint. To determine the compatibility of the movie, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
-
In the Open box, type the appropriate command for your operating system.
- In Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), type: mplayer.exe
- In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 or Microsoft Windows 2000/XP, type: mplay32.exe
- Click OK. Media Player is started.
- On the File menu, click Open.
- Select the movie that you want to verify. Click Open. The video will play, if it is the correct format. If video does not play, re-encode your video using the approved CODECs listed above.
Note: For best results, the movie you use should use a high resolution video. (In this case, high resolution is considered to be, at a minimum, a Windows Media video file (.wmv) encoded using Windows Media Video 9 at a resolution of 640×480 and at a bit rate of 2 million bits per second (bps), or the equivalent.) The movie should have the same aspect ratio as the slide deck, or the movie will look distorted when it plays. Most PowerPoint slide shows have an aspect ratio of 4:3, and the typical standard for movies (640×480 resolution) also has a 4:3 aspect ratio.
Pictures
Images inserted into PowerPoint are embedded into the presentation. Images that are created at a dpi setting higher than 75 dpi are not necessary and will only increase the size of your presentation. Try to avoid overloading your presentation with unnecessary images. Use common image formats that are cross platform such as JPG, PNG, GIF, and BMP. JPG images are the preferred file format for inserted images.
Fonts
We can only supply fonts that are included in the base installation of Windows. Any
font other than these will need to be embedded into your PowerPoint presentation.
The fonts we suggest using are Times New Roman, Arial, and
Tahoma. Use of fonts not included in Windows can lead to words that bleed
into graphics or bullets which may be the wrong style. Microsoft provides a utility
that can tell you if a Font can be embedded. It is located at the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/property/property.htm?fname=%20&fsize
You can embed the fonts into your presentation by following these steps.
Office XP:
- Click File, and then Save As.
- On the Tools drop down menu select Save Options
- At the bottom of the menu you will see an Embed TrueType Fonts check box. Check the box.
Office 2000
- Click File, and then Save As.
- On the Tools drop down menu select Embed TrueType Fonts.
Users of Apple Computers
If you are producing your presentation on an Apple computer please be aware of the
following issues. If you are using PowerPoint 2001, it is recommended that you
install the Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 before creating your
presentation. You can find this at
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/office2001/sr1.asp
Before You Send Your Presentation
To ensure you have a successful presentation, please check the following items to make sure your videos will play on the NMM presentation computer.
- Make sure you send all files associated with your PowerPoint presentation. (If you have videos that play in your presentation, you must copy each individual video onto the disc with your presentation.)
- Make sure your PowerPoint presentation and your videos are in the same folder. Do not put videos in subfolders or they will not play.
